Ghost Town at Sundown questions by chapter

We know this book well. Every question asks about something that happens in its chapter, a moment, a choice or a character, without giving away what comes next. One question per chapter, across all 10 chapters, and every one is editable before you print. The example answers under 3 of the chapters are the ones printed at the front of the booklet.

  1. Chapter 1

The new riddle is about a ‘lonely voice.’ Write it down and make a guess before you read on.

  2. Chapter 2

Jack and Annie arrive in a Wild West town, but no one is there. What does ‘ghost town’ mean? What clues show it is empty?

Example answer: A ghost town is a town where everyone moved away and left the buildings behind. The clues are the dusty street, the empty buildings and the quiet. Jack reads in his book that people left when the gold ran out.

  3. Chapter 3

Something spooky happens in the old town. What is it, and what do you think caused it?

  4. Chapter 4

Jack and Annie hear riders coming. Who arrives, and why do the kids hide?

  5. Chapter 5

Jack and Annie meet a cowboy named Slim. What is he like? Why does he help them?

Example answer: Slim is tall and quiet and a little grumpy at first, but he is kind. He helps Jack and Annie because they are kids on their own in a dangerous place. He also needs help getting his horses back.

  6. Chapter 6

Slim’s wild horses, the mustangs, are in danger. What is the plan, and what part do Jack and Annie play?

  7. Chapter 7

Annie has a special way with one of the horses. What does she do, and how does the horse react?

  8. Chapter 8

Jack and Annie have to face the horse thieves. How do they and Slim outsmart them?

  9. Chapter 9

The answer to the riddle is found in a special place. What is the answer, and how does the place give it away?

Example answer: The answer is an echo. In the canyon, when Annie calls out, her voice comes back to her out of the blue sky. The riddle said a lonely voice calls out to you, and an echo is a voice with nobody there.

  10. Chapter 10

What did Jack and Annie learn from Slim? What did you learn about life in the Old West?

Bigger questions for when the book is finished, each printed on its own ruled page at the end of the booklet.

  1. Slim says a lot with just a few words. What is one thing he taught Jack and Annie without a speech? How do you learn best, by being told or by watching?

How to use this Ghost Town at Sundown reading journal

At home, as a discussion guide

After each chapter your reader writes a few lines on that chapter’s question. Read the answer together at bedtime: it shows what they understood and gives you something real to talk about, without a quiz.

In class, as a novel study

Print a class set (booklets fold from plain letter paper) and use one question per chapter as the reading-response or literature-circle prompt. The example answers at the front show what a full answer looks like.

Homeschool

One booklet covers the whole book, 10 chapters, so it doubles as the reading log for Ghost Town at Sundown. Reword any question before printing to match your reader.

Printing

The booklet PDF prints on ordinary 8.5 × 11 paper: print double-sided (flip on the short edge) at 100%, fold the stack in half and staple on the fold. There is also a one-page-per-sheet PDF and A5 binder pages.
