How it works

Did They Really Read? turns any chapter book into a printable reading check-in: one question per chapter, example answers included, printed as a fold-and-staple booklet.

1. Type the book. Start typing any chapter book on the home page. Popular books open instantly with questions already written for that story; for anything else the app writes one thoughtful question per chapter (with the classic question bank as the always-works fallback). No account, nothing to set up.
2. Check the print preview. The page shows exactly how your booklet prints, sheet by sheet. Switch to “Edit pages” to reword any question, add your reader’s name to the cover, or adjust the chapter count for books we don’t know yet.
3. Print, fold, staple. Tap “Open booklet PDF” — it opens print-ready in a new tab. Print double-sided (flip on the short edge) at 100%, fold the stack in half, and staple on the fold. Done in about a minute.

What you get

Every journal starts with a cover page and a short “how to answer” guide with example answers, followed by one page per chapter — a question, ruled lines to write on, and a “new word I learned” prompt. Three print formats:

• Booklet PDF (US Letter) — the default. Pages are imposed in saddle-stitch order: print double-sided, fold in half, staple on the fold, and it reads 1, 2, 3… like a little book.
• Plain PDF — one half-letter page per sheet in reading order, if you’d rather not fold anything.
• A5 binder pages — full-size pages with a hole-punch margin for a ring binder.

Printing the booklet

Choose US Letter paper, print double-sided (flip on the short edge) at 100% scale — don’t “fit to page” — then fold the stack in half and staple on the fold.

Is this a test?

No. It’s a low-pressure way to see what your reader understood and start a better conversation about the book. Every question is editable before you print, and nothing requires a login — for you or your kid. See real pages on the examples page, or browse ready-made books.
