Dog Man: A Sprinkle in Time questions by chapter

We don’t know this book well enough to ask about its story, so these are open-ended prompts that get a reader thinking about the chapter they just finished: what happened, who changed, what they would do. One question per chapter, across all 12 chapters, and every one is editable before you print. The example answers under 3 of the chapters are the ones printed at the front of the booklet.

  1. Chapter 1

What is the most important thing that happens in this chapter? Explain how it affects the story.

  2. Chapter 2

Based on a clue in this chapter, what do you predict will happen next? Explain how the clue supports your prediction.

Example answer: In a made-up practice chapter, I might notice that a character leaves a window open just before a storm. I would predict that rain could get into the room and cause a problem. The open window and the approaching storm are clues that support my prediction. I would keep reading to see whether the character notices the danger in time.

  3. Chapter 3

What does a character's choice in this chapter show about their personality? Use a detail from the chapter to support your idea.

Example answer: In a made-up practice chapter, I might read about a character who stops playing to help a friend find a lost notebook. I would describe that character as caring because they give up something fun to help someone else. The choice shows that their friend's feelings matter to them. I think actions like this reveal more about a person than simply saying they are kind.

  4. Chapter 4

Choose an interesting or unfamiliar word from this chapter. What do you think it means, and how do the words or pictures around it help you?

  5. Chapter 5

What lesson about life or getting along with others might this chapter suggest? Explain which part gave you that idea.

  6. Chapter 6

Which part of this chapter did you enjoy most or least? Explain what made you feel that way.

Example answer: In a made-up practice chapter, my favorite part might be when two characters finally listen to each other after an argument. I would enjoy that moment because it shows them trying to understand both sides. It would also make me feel hopeful about their friendship. To me, solving a disagreement can be just as interesting as an exciting action scene.

  7. Chapter 7

What problem or challenge does a character face in this chapter? Describe how they respond and what still needs to be solved.

  8. Chapter 8

How does a character seem to feel in this chapter? Explain how their words, actions, or expressions help you understand those feelings.

  9. Chapter 9

How does the place where this chapter happens affect what the characters can do? Give an example from your reading.

  10. Chapter 10

What new difficulty might a character face after this chapter? Use something you have read so far to explain your prediction.

  11. Chapter 11

If you could give one character advice about something in this chapter, what would you say? Explain why your advice could help.

  12. Chapter 12

What idea seems important in this chapter, such as kindness, courage, honesty, or belonging? Explain how a detail in the chapter helps show that idea.
