About the book

Get ready for Action, Suspense, Romance... and Laffs! George and Harold have created a new breed of justice. When Greg the police dog and his cop companion are injured on the job, a life-saving surgery changes the course of history, and Dog Man is born. With the head of a dog and the body of a human, this heroic hound digs into deception, claws after crooks, rolls over robbers, and scampers after squirrels. Will he be able to resist the call of the wild to answer the call of duty?

Dog Man questions by chapter

We know the book, its characters, setting and story, but not what happens in each chapter. So every question is written for this book, and any of them works wherever your reader has just stopped. One question per chapter, across all 8 chapters, and every one is editable before you print. The example answers under 3 of the chapters are the ones printed at the front of the booklet.

  1. Chapter 1

What is the most important thing that happened in this chapter so far, and how does it affect Dog Man or the police department?

  2. Chapter 2

How does Dog Man show both dog-like and human-like qualities in this chapter? Use one detail from what you read.

Example answer: Dog Man shows dog-like qualities because he gets excited and acts on instinct, like a real dog would. He also shows human-like qualities because he tries to help people and do his job as a police officer. I think the mix makes him funny, but it also makes him special. He does not always act perfectly, but he usually wants to do the right thing.

  3. Chapter 3

Based on Petey the Cat's actions or plans so far, what do you think he might try next? What clues make you think that?

  4. Chapter 4

Choose one funny moment from this chapter. Why did Dav Pilkey make it funny, and how did the humor help tell the story?

  5. Chapter 5

What problem or conflict is happening in this chapter, and what steps do the characters take to solve it?

  6. Chapter 6

Find one interesting word, sound effect, or phrase in this chapter. What do you think it means, and how does it add to the action or mood?

Example answer: One interesting sound effect I noticed was a big action sound in the pictures. I think it was meant to show something happening very suddenly. It made the scene feel louder and more exciting, almost like I could hear it. The sound effect helped me understand the action quickly without needing a lot of extra words.

  7. Chapter 7

So far, what message about being a hero do you think the book is showing through Dog Man's choices?

  8. Chapter 8

What is your opinion of how Chief treats Dog Man in this chapter? Explain whether you think it is fair, helpful, or confusing.

Example answer: I think Chief can be a little too hard on Dog Man sometimes. Dog Man makes mistakes, but he is also trying to protect the city and help the police. Chief's rules can be helpful because Dog Man needs to learn self-control. Still, I think Chief should notice Dog Man's good choices, too.

How to use this Dog Man reading journal

At home, as a discussion guide

After each chapter your reader writes a few lines on that chapter’s question. Read the answer together at bedtime: it shows what they understood and gives you something real to talk about, without a quiz.

In class, as a novel study

Print a class set (booklets fold from plain letter paper) and use one question per chapter as the reading-response or literature-circle prompt. The example answers at the front show what a full answer looks like.

Homeschool

One booklet covers the whole book, 8 chapters, so it doubles as the reading log for Dog Man. Reword any question before printing to match your reader.

Printing

The booklet PDF prints on ordinary 8.5 × 11 paper: print double-sided (flip on the short edge) at 100%, fold the stack in half and staple on the fold. There is also a one-page-per-sheet PDF and A5 binder pages.
