About the book
Sena Kobayakawa has been a gofer for bullies his whole life. As a result, he runs at lightning-fast speeds. When he enters high school, his childhood friend Mamori suggests that he join a club to make friends. He's tricked into joining the football team manned by a demon-like captain and an overly good-natured front linesman.

-

What is the biggest challenge facing Sena or the Deimon Devil Bats so far? Explain why it matters.
-
Chapter 2
How does Sena react when he feels nervous or pressured in what you just read? What does his reaction show about him?

-
Chapter 6
Besides running fast, what strength does Sena show in what you have read? Explain how that strength could help him.
Example answer: I think Sena shows that he can keep trying even when he feels unsure of himself. Joining a football team means facing things he does not already know how to do. His speed is useful, but I think his willingness to learn matters too. That strength could help him become a better teammate.
-
Chapter 7
Where have you noticed courage in the story so far? Explain why the action you chose takes courage.
-
Chapter 8
Choose a word from your latest chapter that helps describe a character's feelings. What do you think it means, and which clues helped you?
-
Chapter 9
How does Deimon High School shape the story so far? Explain how being at this school affects Sena or another character.
-
Chapter 10
What have you learned about Mamori's care for Sena so far? Explain how trying to protect someone can help them or hold them back.
-
Chapter 11
What does the name Eyeshield 21 mean to you at this point in the story? Explain how it connects to what you know about Sena.
Example answer: To me, Eyeshield 21 sounds like the name of a mysterious sports hero. It feels different from the nervous Sena I have met in the story. I think that difference is important because people may notice his football skills before they understand him as a person. The name makes me wonder how Sena will feel about being seen in a new way.
-
Chapter 12
Which moment in your latest chapter shows people working together—or failing to work together? Explain what the Devil Bats could learn from it.
-

-
Chapter 19
Why does football matter to a character you have read about? Explain what that character seems to want from playing or building a team.
-
Chapter 20
Choose one picture or panel from your latest chapter. How do the faces, body positions, or other details help you understand what is happening?
-
Chapter 21
What does the story suggest so far about natural talent and practice? Explain your ideas using Sena or another player.
Example answer: I think the story shows that having a talent does not mean you know everything about a sport. Sena can run very fast, but football also requires learning rules and working with other players. I would not expect speed alone to solve every problem. To me, talent gives someone a starting point, while practice helps that person use it well.
-
Chapter 22
What question are you most curious about after this chapter? Explain which detail made you wonder about it.
-
Chapter 23
How does a relationship involving Sena affect him in what you just read? Explain whether it gives him support, pressure, or both.

-
Chapter 25
What lesson from your latest chapter could help you at school, in a sport, or with friends? Explain the connection to your own life.

How to use this Eyeshield 21 reading journal
At home, as a discussion guide
After each chapter your reader writes a few lines on that chapter’s question. Read the answer together at bedtime: it shows what they understood and gives you something real to talk about, without a quiz.
In class, as a novel study
Print a class set (booklets fold from plain letter paper) and use one question per chapter as the reading-response or literature-circle prompt. The example answers at the front show what a full answer looks like.
Homeschool
One booklet covers the whole book, 25 chapters, so it doubles as the reading log for Eyeshield 21. Reword any question before printing to match your reader.
Printing
The booklet PDF prints on ordinary 8.5 × 11 paper: print double-sided (flip on the short edge) at 100%, fold the stack in half and staple on the fold. There is also a one-page-per-sheet PDF and A5 binder pages.
