Chapter 1
In Chapter 1, Kiki gets ready to leave home and begin her training as a witch. What does she have to do before she leaves, and how do her family members react to her choice?
-
Chapter 2
In Chapter 2, Kiki searches for a town where she can live for a year. What does she notice about the seaside town, and why do you think she decides to stay there?
Example answer: I think Kiki notices that the seaside town is big, busy, and different from home. It probably feels a little scary because not everyone knows what to think about a young witch. I think she decides to stay because the town needs her skills, even if the people do not realize it yet. She also wants to prove that she can be brave and independent.
-
Chapter 3
In Chapter 3, Kiki begins to think about how she can use her flying skill to make a living. What problem does she need to solve, and what idea does she come up with?
-
Chapter 4
In Chapter 4, Kiki starts making deliveries for people. Choose one important delivery from this chapter and explain what makes it harder than she expected.
-
Chapter 5
In Chapter 5, Kiki meets new people in town. How do her actions show what kind of person she is, even when others do not understand her right away?
-
Chapter 6
In Chapter 6, Kiki has to solve a problem while she is away from home. What steps does she take, and what does this show about her growing independence?
-
Chapter 7
In Chapter 7, think about the word "responsibility." What does responsibility mean in this chapter, and how does Kiki show it through her choices?
Example answer: To me, responsibility means doing what you promised, even when it is not easy. Kiki shows responsibility by taking her delivery work seriously and trying to help the person who is counting on her. She does not just give up when there is a problem. This shows she is becoming more mature.
-
Chapter 8
In Chapter 8, Kiki learns more about the people in her new town. How does helping others also help Kiki feel more connected to the community?
-
Chapter 9
In Chapter 9, Kiki faces a misunderstanding or a mistake. What happens, and what lesson can readers learn from the way she handles it?
-
Chapter 10
In Chapter 10, Kiki's friendships become important. How does one friendship change or grow in this chapter, and why does that matter to Kiki?
-
Chapter 11
In Chapter 11, make a prediction based on Kiki's experiences so far. How do you think she will handle future challenges differently from when she first arrived?
-
Chapter 12
By the end of Chapter 12, Kiki has changed since leaving home. What is one way she has grown as a witch and one way she has grown as a person?
Example answer: By the end, I think Kiki has grown as a witch because she understands how to use her flying to help real people. She is not just practicing anymore; she is doing important work. As a person, she has become more confident and patient. She learns that making mistakes does not mean she has failed.

How to use this Kiki's Delivery Service reading journal
At home, as a discussion guide
After each chapter your reader writes a few lines on that chapter’s question. Read the answer together at bedtime: it shows what they understood and gives you something real to talk about, without a quiz.
In class, as a novel study
Print a class set (booklets fold from plain letter paper) and use one question per chapter as the reading-response or literature-circle prompt. The example answers at the front show what a full answer looks like.
Homeschool
One booklet covers the whole book, 12 chapters, so it doubles as the reading log for Kiki's Delivery Service. Reword any question before printing to match your reader.
Printing
The booklet PDF prints on ordinary 8.5 × 11 paper: print double-sided (flip on the short edge) at 100%, fold the stack in half and staple on the fold. There is also a one-page-per-sheet PDF and A5 binder pages.
