Mummies in the Morning questions by chapter

We know this book well. Every question asks about something that happens in its chapter, a moment, a choice or a character, without giving away what comes next. One question per chapter, across all 10 chapters, and every one is editable before you print. The example answers under 3 of the chapters are the ones printed at the front of the booklet.

  1. Chapter 1

A black cat keeps showing up. Where do Jack and Annie see it? What do you think it means?

  2. Chapter 2

Jack and Annie see a line of people heading into the pyramid. What does Jack read in his book about what they are doing?

  3. Chapter 3

Inside the pyramid it is dark and quiet. How do Jack and Annie feel? How would you feel?

  4. Chapter 4

Jack and Annie meet the ghost of a queen. What does she ask them to do, and why does she need help?

Example answer: The queen’s ghost asks them to find her Book of the Dead. It is a scroll with the magic spells she needs to get to the Next Life. She has been waiting a thousand years because she couldn’t find it by herself.

  5. Chapter 5

The queen gives Jack and Annie clues to find her scroll. What are the clues?

  6. Chapter 6

Jack and Annie have to read picture-writing called hieroglyphs. How do they figure it out? Draw one of the pictures.

  7. Chapter 7

Where do Jack and Annie find the scroll? What surprises them there?

  8. Chapter 8

Jack sees the mummy and feels scared, but he does the job anyway. What helps him keep going?

Example answer: Jack is scared of the mummy, but he really wants to help the queen. Annie is not scared, and that helps him too. He remembers that it is just the queen’s body and her real self is the ghost who needs the scroll.

  9. Chapter 9

Jack and Annie get lost in the pyramid. Who leads them out, and why is that surprising?

Example answer: The black cat leads them out of the pyramid. That is surprising because a cat can’t usually understand what you need. I think the cat was sent by the M person to help them.

  10. Chapter 10

What new clue about the M person do Jack and Annie notice? How do all the clues fit together so far?

How to use this Mummies in the Morning reading journal

At home, as a discussion guide

After each chapter your reader writes a few lines on that chapter’s question. Read the answer together at bedtime: it shows what they understood and gives you something real to talk about, without a quiz.

In class, as a novel study

Print a class set (booklets fold from plain letter paper) and use one question per chapter as the reading-response or literature-circle prompt. The example answers at the front show what a full answer looks like.

Homeschool

One booklet covers the whole book, 10 chapters, so it doubles as the reading log for Mummies in the Morning. Reword any question before printing to match your reader.

Printing

The booklet PDF prints on ordinary 8.5 × 11 paper: print double-sided (flip on the short edge) at 100%, fold the stack in half and staple on the fold. There is also a one-page-per-sheet PDF and A5 binder pages.
