Night of the Ninjas questions by chapter

We know the book, its characters, setting and story, but not what happens in each chapter. So every question is written for this book, and any of them works wherever your reader has just stopped. One question per chapter, across all 10 chapters, and every one is editable before you print. The example answers under 3 of the chapters are the ones printed at the front of the booklet.

  1. Chapter 1

Jack and Annie find a note that says ‘Help me.’ Who do they think wrote it? What do they decide to do?

  2. Chapter 2

A small friend joins the adventure. Who is it, and how does Annie feel about it?

  3. Chapter 3

The tree house lands somewhere dark and strange. Where are Jack and Annie, and what clues tell you?

Example answer: Jack and Annie are in Japan a long time ago. It is night and they are in a cave. I know because Jack’s book is about ninjas, and ninjas lived in Japan. It is dark and quiet, which makes it feel scary.

  4. Chapter 4

What do you know about ninjas from this book? Write two facts Jack learns from his book.

Example answer: Ninjas were very quiet and could move without being seen. They wore dark clothes so they could hide in the shadows. Jack also learns that they lived in Japan hundreds of years ago and trained very hard.

  5. Chapter 5

What do Jack and Annie learn about who is friendly and who is dangerous in old Japan?

  6. Chapter 6

What is the most frightening moment so far? What does Jack do about his fear?

Example answer: The most frightening moment for me was when Jack and Annie were grabbed in the dark and couldn’t see who had them. Jack was scared, but he stayed with Annie and kept thinking about what to do. He tried to be as quiet as the ninjas.

  7. Chapter 7

Annie trusts people and animals quickly. Jack likes to check his book first. Which way works better in this story? Give an example.

  8. Chapter 8

Jack and Annie have to move quietly and stay hidden. What tricks do they use, or what would you do?

  9. Chapter 9

Morgan is under a spell, and Jack and Annie need four special things to free her. Why do you think the first one is hidden in a place like this?

  10. Chapter 10

What did you like best about this adventure? What was different from the earlier books?

How to use this Night of the Ninjas reading journal

At home, as a discussion guide

After each chapter your reader writes a few lines on that chapter’s question. Read the answer together at bedtime: it shows what they understood and gives you something real to talk about, without a quiz.

In class, as a novel study

Print a class set (booklets fold from plain letter paper) and use one question per chapter as the reading-response or literature-circle prompt. The example answers at the front show what a full answer looks like.

Homeschool

One booklet covers the whole book, 10 chapters, so it doubles as the reading log for Night of the Ninjas. Reword any question before printing to match your reader.

Printing

The booklet PDF prints on ordinary 8.5 × 11 paper: print double-sided (flip on the short edge) at 100%, fold the stack in half and staple on the fold. There is also a one-page-per-sheet PDF and A5 binder pages.
