Witchlings questions by chapter

We know this book well. Every question asks about something that happens in its chapter, a moment, a choice or a character, without giving away what comes next. One question per chapter, across all 30 chapters, and every one is editable before you print. The example answers under 3 of the chapters are the ones printed at the front of the booklet.

1. Chapter 1

   What do you learn about Seven Salazar and the magical town of Ravenskill in the opening chapter? Which details make the setting feel special or different from our world?

2. Chapter 2

   Seven has strong hopes for the Black Moon Ceremony. What does she want to happen, and why does it matter so much to her?

3. Chapter 3

   How does the Black Moon Ceremony change Seven’s life? Describe her first reaction to the coven she is placed in.

4. Chapter 4

   Seven, Valley, and Thorn do not all feel the same way about becoming a coven. How do their different personalities show in this chapter?

5. Chapter 5

   What are the possible consequences for the Witchlings if they cannot seal their coven? How do those consequences make the story more tense?

6. Chapter 6

   Choose one word from this chapter that is important to the world of the story, such as “coven,” “Spare,” or “Toadie.” What does it mean, and how does it help you understand the plot?

7. Chapter 7

   What problem do the three Witchlings face as they begin trying to work together? What advice would you give them?

8. Chapter 8

   Seven has to deal with disappointment and embarrassment. How does she respond, and what does that show about her character?

   Example answer: I think Seven feels really hurt because things did not happen the way she hoped. Even though she is embarrassed, she does not completely give up. She keeps trying to understand what she can do next. This shows me that Seven is stronger than she thinks and that she can keep going when life is unfair.

9. Chapter 9

   What clues does the author give that the task ahead will be dangerous? Which clue seems most important to you, and why?

10. Chapter 10

    What do the Witchlings learn about the Nightbeast or the danger they must face? How does this new information change their plan?

11. Chapter 11

    How does the author use scary or mysterious details to build suspense in this chapter? Give one or two examples.

12. Chapter 12

    In this chapter, the Witchlings each bring different strengths and weaknesses to the group. What is one strength each character shows?

13. Chapter 13

    Make a prediction: What do you think will be the biggest challenge for Seven, Valley, and Thorn as they continue their task? Use evidence from the story.

14. Chapter 14

    How does magic in this chapter connect to practice, learning, or courage? What message might the author be sending about getting better at something hard?

15. Chapter 15

    Valley can be difficult, but she is also more than just “mean.” What do you learn about her in this part of the story?

16. Chapter 16

    What new clue or discovery helps the Witchlings understand their mission better? How does it move the story forward?

17. Chapter 17

    Describe a moment when trust becomes important in this chapter. Why is trust hard for the characters right now?

18. Chapter 18

    What do the rules and traditions of Ravenskill show about the witching world? Do you think these rules are fair? Explain your opinion.

    Example answer: The rules and traditions show that Ravenskill cares a lot about covens and fitting into the right group. I do not think all the rules are fair because they can punish Witchlings for something they did not choose. It seems wrong that being different can make someone feel like they do not belong. I think rules should help people grow instead of making them feel ashamed.

19. Chapter 19

    Seven has to make choices when things feel risky. What choice does she make, and what does it reveal about what she values?

20. Chapter 20

    How has the relationship between Seven, Thorn, and Valley changed since the beginning of the book? Use examples from the story.

21. Chapter 21

    Sometimes monsters in stories are not exactly what they first seem to be. How does this idea appear in this chapter?

22. Chapter 22

    What theme, or big lesson, about kindness, bravery, or belonging do you notice in this chapter? Explain how the events show that theme.

23. Chapter 23

    The Witchlings must think carefully before acting. What is their plan, and what could go wrong?

24. Chapter 24

    During the most exciting part of the story, how do the characters show bravery in different ways?

    What truth or surprise is revealed in this chapter? How does it change the way you understand earlier events?

    How do the adults or leaders in the story react to what the Witchlings have done? What does their reaction tell you about them?

27. Chapter 27

    How has Seven changed from the beginning of the book to now? Describe at least two ways she has grown.

    Example answer: Seven has changed because she is braver and more sure of herself. At the beginning, she mostly wanted to be accepted and be in the coven she imagined. Now she understands that real friendship can come from unexpected people. She also learns to speak up and keep trying, even when the problem seems too big.

28. Chapter 28

    The book explores what it means to belong. What does belonging mean to Seven by this point in the story?

    If the story continued after this chapter, what do you predict might happen next for the Witchlings? What clues support your prediction?
