Spaced Out the Graphic Novel questions by chapter

We don’t know this book well enough to ask about its story, so these are open-ended prompts that get a reader thinking about the chapter they just finished: what happened, who changed, what they would do. One question per chapter, across all 24 chapters, and every one is editable before you print. The example answers under 3 of the chapters are the ones printed at the front of the booklet.

  1. Chapter 1

What is the most important thing that happens in this chapter? Explain why it matters to the story so far.

  2. Chapter 2

Which action or line of dialogue tells you something about a character's personality? Explain what it shows.

  3. Chapter 3

Based on a clue in this chapter, what do you predict might happen next? Explain your thinking.

  4. Chapter 4

How does the setting affect what the characters can do in this chapter? Give an example.

  5. Chapter 5

What feeling did you have while reading this chapter? Describe the part that made you feel that way.

  6. Chapter 6

Choose a word from this chapter that is new or interesting to you. What do you think it means, and which nearby words or pictures help you figure it out?

Example answer: If I chose the word "hesitated," I would first look at what the character does before and after it. I think it means pausing because you are unsure. A pause before speaking or moving would support my guess. I would reread the sentence with that meaning to check whether it makes sense.

  7. Chapter 7

What does a character want in this chapter, and what makes that goal easy or hard to reach?

  8. Chapter 8

How does this chapter show the importance of an idea such as friendship, courage, honesty, or teamwork? Use a detail to explain.

  9. Chapter 9

Which choice in this chapter would you have made differently? Explain what you would do and why.

  10. Chapter 10

What new information did you learn in this chapter? How does it change your understanding of the story?

  11. Chapter 11

Find a moment when a character's words and actions reveal a feeling. What is the feeling, and what clues support your answer?

  12. Chapter 12

What question do you hope the next chapter will answer? Explain why that question interests you.

Example answer: I want to know what the main character will decide to do next. I am interested in choices because they can change the direction of a story. I will watch for clues in the character's words and actions. Those clues may help me understand the decision, even if it surprises me.

  13. Chapter 13

Choose a strong action word or descriptive word from this chapter. How does it help you imagine what is happening?

  14. Chapter 14

How do two characters treat each other in this chapter? Explain what their behavior shows about their relationship.

  15. Chapter 15

What causes an important event in this chapter, and what happens because of it?

  16. Chapter 16

Which detail from this chapter might become important later? Predict how it could matter.

  17. Chapter 17

What did you like or dislike about the way this chapter was told? Support your opinion with an example.

  18. Chapter 18

What does this chapter suggest about how people handle problems? Explain using a character's response.

  19. Chapter 19

Describe a moment you could picture clearly. How did the words, the illustrations, or both help you imagine it?

  20. Chapter 20

What advice would you give a character at this point in the story? Explain how your advice could help.

Example answer: I would tell the character to pause and think before making a hard choice. I think listing what could happen with each choice would help. I would also suggest asking someone trustworthy for advice. That could help the character see an option they had not thought about.

  21. Chapter 21

Select a word or phrase that helps set the mood in this chapter. What mood does it create, and why?

  22. Chapter 22

How does something in this chapter connect to your life, another story, or the world? Explain both a similarity and a difference.

  23. Chapter 23

Which moment in this chapter deserves the most attention from a reader? Explain what makes it important or interesting.

  24. Chapter 24

Write a short title for this chapter that captures its main idea. Explain how your title fits at least two details.
