The Knight at Dawn questions by chapter
We know this book well. Every question asks about something that happens in its chapter, a moment, a choice or a character, without giving away what comes next. One question per chapter, across all 10 chapters, and every one is editable before you print. The example answers under 3 of the chapters are the ones printed at the front of the booklet.
-
Chapter 1
Jack can’t stop thinking about the medallion. What questions are keeping him awake? What questions do you have?
-
Chapter 2
Jack and Annie find a bookmark in the castle book. Why is that a clue that someone else has been in the tree house?
Example answer: The bookmark is blue leather and it has an M on it, just like the medallion. Nobody was in the tree house except Jack and Annie, so someone else must have put it there. I think the M person is leaving clues on purpose.
-
Chapter 3
Annie wants to get closer to the castle and Jack wants to stay back. How do they decide what to do? What would you do?
-
Chapter 4
Inside the castle there is a big feast. Describe what Jack and Annie see, hear and smell.
-
Chapter 5
Jack and Annie get caught. How does Jack feel in the dungeon? Find a sentence that shows it.
-
Chapter 6
Annie uses something from home to get out of trouble. What is it, and why does it work on the guards?
Example answer: Annie uses her flashlight. The guards live a long time ago and have never seen a flashlight, so they think it is a magic wand. That scares them and gives Jack and Annie time to run away.
-
Chapter 7
Jack and Annie find a secret passage. Where does it lead? Was it what they hoped for?
-
Chapter 8
The knight helps Jack and Annie without saying a word. Why do you think he helps them?
Example answer: I think the knight helps them because he is brave and kind, and that is what a knight is supposed to do. He does not ask questions. He just lifts them out of the water and puts them on his horse.
-
Chapter 9
Jack loves the ride on the knight’s horse. What makes it so special to him?
-
Chapter 10
What have Jack and Annie figured out about the person who owns the tree house? What is still a mystery?

How to use this The Knight at Dawn reading journal
At home, as a discussion guide
After each chapter your reader writes a few lines on that chapter’s question. Read the answer together at bedtime: it shows what they understood and gives you something real to talk about, without a quiz.
In class, as a novel study
Print a class set (booklets fold from plain letter paper) and use one question per chapter as the reading-response or literature-circle prompt. The example answers at the front show what a full answer looks like.
Homeschool
One booklet covers the whole book, 10 chapters, so it doubles as the reading log for The Knight at Dawn. Reword any question before printing to match your reader.
Printing
The booklet PDF prints on ordinary 8.5 × 11 paper: print double-sided (flip on the short edge) at 100%, fold the stack in half and staple on the fold. There is also a one-page-per-sheet PDF and A5 binder pages.
Where the questions come from
Each question is about its own chapter. We know this book well. Every question asks about something that happens in its chapter, a moment, a choice or a character, without giving away what comes next. The questions were drafted with AI from what is known about the book and checked before publishing; every one is editable before you print.
