About the book
Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is on the most dangerous quest of his life. With the help of a satyr and a daughter of Athena, Percy must journey across the United States to catch a thief who has stolen the original weapon of mass destruction—Zeus’ master bolt. Along the way, he must face a host of mythological enemies determined to stop him. Most of all, he must come to terms with a father he has never known, and an Oracle that has warned him of betrayal by a friend.

Chapter 2
Percy sees three old ladies knitting and cutting yarn. What do you think this strange moment might mean for Percy later in the story?
-
Chapter 3
What does Percy's relationship with his mother show about both of their characters? Give examples from the chapter.
Example answer: I think Percy and his mom love each other a lot and try to protect each other. Percy notices when his mom is sad, and he wants her to be happy because Gabe treats her badly. His mom is kind and brave because she takes Percy to the cabin even when things start to feel dangerous. Their relationship shows that family is one of the most important things to Percy.
-

-
Chapter 15
Ares asks Percy and his friends to do a job for him. Do you think they should trust Ares? Explain your opinion with reasons from the chapter.
Example answer: I do not think Percy and his friends should fully trust Ares. He is a god, but he acts rude and pushy, and he seems to enjoy conflict. I understand why they agree to help him because they need information and transportation. Still, I would be nervous because Ares seems like someone who might use them for his own plan.
-

-
Chapter 22
Luke's betrayal changes Percy's understanding of the quest. How does this ending affect what you think might happen next?
Example answer: Luke's betrayal makes me think Percy will have to be much more careful about who he trusts. I was surprised because Luke seemed like a helpful friend at camp. Now Percy knows the danger is not only outside Camp Half-Blood, but also inside it. I think the next part of Percy's life will include trying to stop Kronos and figure out which people are truly on his side.

How to use this The Lightning Thief reading journal
At home, as a discussion guide
After each chapter your reader writes a few lines on that chapter’s question. Read the answer together at bedtime: it shows what they understood and gives you something real to talk about, without a quiz.
In class, as a novel study
Print a class set (booklets fold from plain letter paper) and use one question per chapter as the reading-response or literature-circle prompt. The example answers at the front show what a full answer looks like.
Homeschool
One booklet covers the whole book, 22 chapters, so it doubles as the reading log for The Lightning Thief. Reword any question before printing to match your reader.
Printing
The booklet PDF prints on ordinary 8.5 × 11 paper: print double-sided (flip on the short edge) at 100%, fold the stack in half and staple on the fold. There is also a one-page-per-sheet PDF and A5 binder pages.
Where the questions come from
Each question is about its own chapter. We know this book well. Every question asks about something that happens in its chapter, a moment, a choice or a character, without giving away what comes next. The questions were drafted with AI from what is known about the book and checked before publishing; every one is editable before you print.
